Last night Kilkenny Rugby Club finished their 2016/17 season with victory in the Provincial Towns Plate Final against Dundalk at Naas RFC.
It was a successful end to a difficult season on the field for the Kilkenny’s J1 side.
“It was a great way for the lads to finish the season”, says James Blanchfield, organiser of Kilkenny’s upcoming Rugby Sevens weekend.
“They’ve had a disappointing season in terms of their league performance, and were unlucky in the [Provincial Towns] cup but it’s great for the coaches and Dave, the captain, and all the lads to finish the season on a good note, beating a good Dundalk team in a very good game in Naas last night.”
Speaking to KCLR on Thursday morning, James said the massive support in contrast to their opponents made such a massive difference.
“The ratio of Kilkenny supporters to Dundalk supporters was phenomenal”, says Blanchfield of fan support.
“They really outnumbered them on the line as well with support which was great and again it just goes back to give the lads what they deserve that though the season didn’t go well, everybody went up in their numbers last night to give the support that they did really deserve.”
“It does go to show the loyalty that’s [in] the club. It’s easy when the club is down to question the loyalty of supporters and players. They came out in their droves last night to give lads a hell of a lot of support. It’s not easy to get to Naas at 8pm on a Wednesday night but there were people there last night that haven’t seen matches in a long time and fair dues to them.”
