Football analyst Willie Quinlan says it’s “a great idea” to continue playing the club games in Carlow despite the Inter-County senior and minors sides being involved in Leinster Championship action the following weekend.

Speaking to KCLR, Willie says continuing with the club fixtures helps bring greater all round improvement for club players.

“I think it’s a great idea, the club scene”, says Quinlan.

“Obviously, the county players are not going to be involved in these games, but the club players need to have their games. They are training for a couple of months, so it’s games that bring them to the next level and I wouldn’t stop the games.”

“Even the likes of the bigger counties Inter-County players would be involved in them because it just brings them to the next level – the next level of fitness, next level of sharpness and they really get clued in.”

“Match sharpness, that’s what it’s all about. So I think it’s a great idea to keep playing the club scene at the moment.”

Carlow’s next outings see the senior hurlers in Christy Ring semi-final action against Wicklow on Saturday next at Netwatch Cullen Park while for the footballers, it’s a double header on Sunday next with Carlow and Wexford contesting the Leinster Minor Football Championship quarter final at 1pm before Carlow and Wexford meet in the Leinster Football Championship at 3pm.
