Wexford Youths proved too hot for Kilkenny to hand in a sunny Thomastown on Sunday afternoon as Laura Heffernan’s ladies ran out comfortable 4-1 winners.
Wexford were a goal up inside the first quarter of an ho, Kylie Murphy rounding former ‘Youths goalkeeper Tamara Furlong to slot home her side’s first. Nicky Plunkett replaced the injured Erica Byrne midway through the first half before Katrina Parrock headed past furlong to double Wexford’s lead after 27 minutes.
Parrock grabbed her second and Wexford’s third three minutes later before Kilkenny’s defence tightened up to prevent any further damage to the scoreline before the break.
The second half started much like the first, and while Jenny Chambers went close to grabbing one back, Wexford were 4-0 up inside five minutes of the restart with Emma Hansberry finding a tight angle to fire home.
Kilkenny did find the back of the net on 55 minutes, a Bethany Carroll free kick finding the foot of Nicky Plunkett for a volley home.
While both sides pressed for goals through the second half, 4-1 is how it would finish out.
Kilkenny’s next league game is away to Galway on September 2nd.
