Carlow’s Championship preparations have been dealt a serious blow with the news that Brendan Murphy is to depart to the US this summer.

Carlow’s campaign is due to get underway against Louth on Sunday 13 May. Murphy put in “his best League campaign” according to KCLR analyst Willie Quinlan, and his departure will leave a big hole in Carlow’s summer push.

The Rathvilly clubman has been traveled previously, spending some time with the Sydney Swans around 10 years ago, before moving to New York during the 2015 championship.

Speaking to KCLR on the news of Murphy’s pending departure, Willie says that Brendan played some of his best football during their run to winning promotion to Division 3 of the National League.

“I did hear somebody talk about it (Murphy’s move) at a match the other night that he was supposed to be going away to America or somewhere.”

“If he goes away, he’s a huge loss to Carlow because it’s probably his best League campaign that he has had in a number of years. Discipline was very good, he wins great ball around the middle, he was contributing on the scoreboard as well so he would be a massive loss to Carlow.”

“You would like to think he would hold on for the Championship after getting out of Division 4 and into Division 3 and try to push on and get a couple of wins in the Championship and see can they improve for next year.”

Carlow v Louth is live from O’Moore Park on KCLR on Sunday 13 May.
