Evergreen manager Gary Maher says he was delighted they kept a clean sheet in yesterday’s KCLR McCalmont Cup Final victory over Thomastown United.

Speaking to KCLR after the game, Gary said he was confident they would win once they kept a clean sheet.

“We controlled the game. We started very well. We actually got the goal from a corner. It was something we worked on in training Friday night so it was great to see something that we worked on in the training ground come off.

“The thing that pleased about it mostly is we defended absolutely excellently. I knew from the start that if we defended properly we would always score.

“I think we have been held scoreless once this season and that was in the FAI Cup, I always knew we would score, but the concern for us once if we kept a clean sheet, we would always and that was the most enjoyable thing for me,” he said.

Gary continued by saying it would be a season of underachievement if they don’t win the Premier Division.

“The goal at the start of the year would have been to win a League, but the disappointing thing for us is we are not in control of it, we are not in control of our destiny, but we have the points on the board, so it’s up to the lads either Booters or Thomastown to catch us or Booters to pass us out so we wait and see what the result is come Wednesday night.

“The disappointing thing for us is it’s out of our control, the ideal result would be a draw that would mean we would win the League, if Thomastown win we would come back here next Sunday and go a play-off again, and if Booters win they win the League so look as I said, it’s out of our control,” he said.
