Monaghan native Emmet McAviney says that Monaghan manager Malachy O’Rourke deserves immense credit for the way he has strengthened the panel over the years.

It’s a busy day for Emmet as he is also involved training the Young Irelands (Gowran) hurlers for the their Intermediate clash against John Lockes Callan Sunday evening, and speaking to KCLR ahead of the All-Ireland Semi-Final clash, he says that the scoring load has now been taken off star forward Conor McManus.

“Look at how other teams respect him, they double mark him sometimes, they give him the greatest of respect so that says it all.

“McManus is definitely up there with any of those top players. He has done it all for Monaghan really and the beauty of it is now we are not just relying on him, you have the likes of Conor McCarthy there, Jack McCarron coming off the bench, you even have got the likes of Fintan Kelly.

“We’re not relying on McManus as much as we were, I think a lot of that goes down to Malachy O’Rourke, who’s brought in all these young fellows. We are not not always relying on McManus anymore, you have a lot of other fellows there too,” he said.
