TJ Reid is the Kilkenny senior hurling captain for the county’s 2019 campaign.

The time-honoured tradition of the county’s senior club champions being able to nominate the senior captain has landed the Shamrocks forward in the role.

While Reid, 31, will captain Kilkenny, there is the small matter of an All-Ireland senior club hurling semi-final on the horizon.

The game against Ballygunner of Waterford on 9 February and a possible place in the final on St. Patrick’s weekend means Reid and his Shamrocks counterparts are unlikely to feature for the Cats in the opening rounds of the league.

Reid previously captained Kilkenny to Leinster glory in 2010, ultimately losing out to Tipperary in that year’s All-Ireland final.

Joey Holden was the club’s most recent representative for the captain’s armband, taking the honour in 2015.

Changes for Fennelly at Ballyhale

Earlier this week it was revealed Reid’s clubmate Colin Fennelly will be trading Ballyhale Shamrocks for Tullogher-Rosbercon, but only on the football front.

Fennelly has reportedly been granted permission by the county board to represent the intermediate champions at senior grade in football as Ballyhale don’t field a senior team. He will continue to play his club hurling with Ballyhale.
