“Unfair to be critical of referees if results don’t go your way” says Turlough O Brien

Carlow Senior Football manager Turlough O’Brien says it would be unfair to be critical of referees if results didn’t go their way.

Carlow were unhappy over not been awarded a free at the end of injury-time to give them victory in last Saturday’s League clash in Mullingar against Westmeath, and speaking to KCLR ahead of today’s showdown at home to Longford, Turlough says it’s important to put themselves in a position to ensure that matches are not decided by refereeing decisions.

He said “Make sure you are in a position that a decision like that doesn’t affect the outcome of the game, and you have got to take any chance that comes your way, and we probably had quiet a number of probably goal opportunities that we didn’t take”.

“The game got very frantic there in the closing stages and it was played at a 100 miles per hour and maybe we would have been better off to have cooler heads and be a little bit more composed on the ball”.

Turlough said “We wouldn’t be looking at a situation where you are criticising referees for losing a game. We had plenty of chances to win the game and that’s what we need to improve on the next day and we can only control what we do ourselves. Referees are human, they make mistakes and we just have to accept them”.
