Iceland will be delighted that they managed to maintain an admirable scoreline against a German side that had scored a total of 26 goals in two matches against both France and Portugal
Timo Werner got Germany off the mark with some great individual skill scoring his 15th goal of the competition. Marco Reus added another on the half hour mark with a superb goal that went straight into the top corner of the Icelandic goal. Iceland knew that conceding two more goals, without scoring would result in them exiting the competition and England progressing. Maybe the German team knew this, as the strangest thing happened, for the first time in the tournament they did not score in a half. I know shocking stuff. Nothing of note really happened for 45 minutes both teams content with their current standings, and when the full time whistle blew both teams were happy enough to progress.
Speaking with German manager after the full time whistle about Germany taking the foot off the peddle, he said with a wry smile to KCLR “We were not at our best.”
