We took a look at the exploits of some Kilkenny athletes at last weekend’s cross country championships in Santry earlier this morning and while there were honours aplenty for those involved in Kilkenny City Harriers, there were great results too for St. Laurence O’Toole’s AC in Askea, Carlow.
The following comes directly from the club via Facebook.
First to the fore was the u12 boys, Paraic Spillane was first home in a very impressive 18th place , Paraic was also a scorer on the Leinster team which won the silver medals, next in was Ned Williams, Cian O’Callaghan, Jack Archbald and Adam Dalton. This was a massive achievement for the team to make nationals as Paraic and Ned are both u12 again next year.
Track star Corrine Kenny had to settle for a silver medal on the Leinster team, Corrine placed 32nd after taking the 2014 and 2013 titles but 3km took its toll and her next target now will be indoors where she will be looking to defend her Leinster and national titles.
In the girls u16 Eva Roche had a fabulous run to place 16th overall and was also a scorer on the Leinster team which claimed the gold medals.
Defending champions u18 boys made a hat trick of all Irelands for their club as again they took home the club title and silver in the county category, Bobby Crowley was first home for the team in 15th, Eamon Murphy 20th, Oran O’ Flaherty 23rd, Jamie wall 36th and filling the team was Seamus English Hayden, Niall Harvey and Kevin Murphy. Eamon was also a scorer on the Leinster team who claimed silver medals.
In the senior mens race Trevor Corcoran going into the last lap was pushing top 70 which was a huge result as this is the pinnacle of cross country in Ireland, Trevor unfortunately had to pull up with only a couple of 100ms to go with stomach problems, next in was Mick Kelly who place 84th with John Culhane not far in behind, well done lads and well done to all.
Eva Roche’s provincial gold win for Leinster came on the back of a career best run.
The Carlow Novice Cross Country championships will be held at Tinryland this on Sunday next at 12pm.
