Students at Colaiste Eaman Ris in Callan yesterday turned out great displays of skill across two games in front of their peers and a teaching staff that reads like a who’s who of contemporary hurling greats.

It was the end of a blitz which featured over 50 first years competing over the past few weeks in memory of the school’s late Principal Brother Damien Brennan with each of the four teams designated a place-name associated with him.

The curtain raiser was the sheild for which the PJ Delaney mentored ‘Arles’ side met Sean Buggy’s ‘Westcourt.

Both crews stuck into the game but a result was too hard to call with the general consensus being it was a draw.

The main event saw David Walton’s ‘Kilbride’ up against Cian Ryan’s ‘Mount Sion’, Kilbride proving stronger with a scoreline of 4-7 to 1-2.

Teacher and Kilkenny hurler Conor Fogarty was on hand to present a delighted but modest winning captain Noel Cahill with the cup:

He said “I was in the forwards and I scored goals and points, it was brilliant, it was very enjoyable and very fun, it was tough but fun playing hurling for a while”.
