In a post on Facebook earlier this evening, Kilkenny City Harriers have announced that Ciara Everard has qualified for the 2016 Olympic Games, set to take place in Rio, Brazil next summer.

The post reads “CIARA EVERARD Qualifies for OLYMPIC GAMES Huge congratulations to Ciara Everard who has achieved qualification standards for the Olympic Games in Rio 2016, after Athletics Ireland confirmed a revision to the process.”

The qualifying standards for a number of events had recently been revised upwards meaning that Everard’s time of 2:01.21 in May puts her in the qualification for the 800 metres event. Joining Ciara in qualification are four men’s marathon runners – Eoin Callaghan, Thomas Frazer, Sean Hehir and Gary Thornton, though only three of the four can travel.

Barbara Sanchez (womens marathon) and Ciara Magean (1500 metres) also qualify.
