Rangers fans who broke lockdown rules by gathering in big groups have been criticised by the First Minister of Scotland, Nicola Sturgeon after their team won their first Scottish Premiership title in a decade.

The Glasgow club, who have yet to be beaten in the league this season, were crowned champions after Celtic failed to beat Dundee United.

Former Rangers striker and manager Ally McCoist says boss Steven Gerrard will be thrilled to have won his first-ever title.

“He will be, just the happiest man and proudest man, I know for a fact he will be, and no matter what he does in his managerial career moving forward he will never do anything greater for so many people than winning this title,” said McCoist.

Police in Scotland made 28 arrests and issued seven fixed penalty fines as thousands of Rangers fans celebrated winning the Scottish Premiership title yesterday.

Large numbers of supporters broke coronavirus regulations by gathering outside of Ibrox and in Glasgow’s St George’s square.

The Scottish first minister Nicola Sturgeon’s tweeted the crowds were “infuriating and disgraceful” and could delay the end of lockdown.

I congratulate @RangersFC on the title win & recognise what a moment this is for fans. But gathering in crowds just now risks lives, and could delay exit from lockdown for everyone else. If those gathering care at all about the safety of others & the country, they will go home. https://t.co/MjzJJEhhsd
