The FA Cup semi-final will be the first football match to allow a crowd into the stadium this year. However, they will not be supporters of the clubs involved.
UK ministers are expected to grant permission for either Leicester v Southampton or Chelsea v Manchester City as a trial for people in the area to attend the game at Wembley. No more than 4,000 people will be allowed to attend the event, but 20,000 will be allowed into the same stadium for the May 15 final.
There is hope that Wembley will be able to facilitate full capacity games come the latter stages of this summer’s European Championships.
The semi-final will be used as a trial run to test the feasibility of increased numbers attending large gatherings as the UK transitions out of lockdown.
Up to 10,000 people will be granted entry to major outdoor venues from May 17.
