Hilda Breslin took over from Kathleen Woods as president of the Camogie Association at Congress earlier this month.

The Kildare woman has a busy schedule ahead with the return to play for various different age groups and teams just around the corner.

Targets

Breslin spoke to KCLR’s Sunday Scoreline about the targets that she has set early in her new role.

“The immediate goal is to get our teams back out onto the pitch and that is a huge achievement for us because it has been difficult.

“Our long-term goals are to look at the fixture schedule so that we can have an even spread for everyone playing the sport whether that be with the county or the club,” said Breslin.

Covid Restrictions

The 31st Camogie Association president was quick to bat away concerns about another set of restrictions later in the year hampering the association’s calendar released earlier this week.

She said: “Time is of the essence due to Covid. We will play the league over six consecutive weekends and we have given the teams a maximum of four weeks training before the league.

“We don’t know what will happen after that, but our immediate aim is to get the leagues done and then we’ll take it from there after the league finals in June.”

Training

There was news this week that players will have to choose between training and playing with their club or intercounty sides in an attempt to reduce the number of contacts that they have.

This led to sharp criticism from some quarters, but the former Leinster chairperson believes that it was the “practical” decision to take.

“For a very short period of time, we just want players to limit their contacts. We’re taking a very practical view because we want to get this right.

“If we get it right now, we can have a full season for everyone. It is not about choosing club over the county or vice versa.”

Breslin also echoed the sentiments of a number of players recently in hoping for further cooperation with the other Gaelic games bodies.

“Going forward I believe that the alliance of the different bodies would strengthen everyone and that would be a logical conclusion that we would join together. If it does happen it would have to be good for all involved.”
