Wicklow senior hurling coach Eoin Larkin officially began his venture into coaching on Sunday as he watched Carlow defeat his side by 3-19 – 0-17 in Netwatch Cullen Park in the opening round of the Allianz National Hurling League Division 2A.
Larkin lamented a key period in the game where Carlow asserted their dominance over Wicklow.
“We were very competitive in the first half and Carlow got on top of us for a fifteen-minute period and scored three goals. That’s the difference at this level and they proved to be crucial,” said Larkin.
Despite the defeat, Larkin was delighted to get the chance to see the players in competitive action for the first time.
He said: “It was a chance for us to get a look at a good few lads on matchday and we’re delighted that we know where we are and we can improve from here. There was a gulf in class really but it’s great to be back.”
On a personal note, Larkin, who also manages Ballinkillen, said that he is really excited to be involved with the game in a coaching capacity.
“It’s a good challenge. I’m with Ballinkillen as well so I’m a busy man. It’s the game I love, and I’ve really enjoyed working with Wicklow for the last three or four weeks.”
