Finally, some good news for those awaiting a return to live sport.
Following the latest round of Covid-19 easing of restrictions, the Camogie Leagues final in June and the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open in July have been earmarked as trial events for large crowd gatherings.
From 7 June, we should also be seeing a return of fans to all other outdoor games with confirmation of a maximum 100 attendees for the majority of outdoor venues, or 200 where venues have a minimum capacity of 5,000. Locally, that means we should be seeing 200 fans at games in Nowlan Park and Netwatch Cullen Park over the summer.

“The Camogie Association are delighted to announce that the Littlewoods National League Final taking place in Croke Park on June 20thwill be a test event for the safe return of spectators to sport. This is a huge honour for the Camogie Association and an endorsement of the immense effort from our fantastic volunteers and staff team across the country ,to ensure that Camogie players safely returned to training and play amid covid restrictions this year.”
Up to 3,000 spectators will be allowed into Croke Park for the Camogie Leagues final on 20 June.
At time of writing it is unsure as to whether that number also includes team, backroom staff etc.
Other live events set to see fans return include Leinster v Dragos (1,200) in the RDS on 11 June along with Cork City v Cabinteely (600) at Turners Cross and Shamrock Rovers v Finn Harps (1,000) on the same date. A race meeting at the Curragh at the end of June is also earmarked to have 1,000 racing fans in attendance for one of three days of racing.
A number of indoor events and concerts will also be trialled across June and July.
2,500 at Irish Open in Mount Juliet
The Dubai Duty Free Irish Open, lost to Mount Juliet in Kilkenny due to Covid-19 last summer, is set to take place from 1-4 July.
While official figures haven’t been confirmed just yet, it is expected that in the region of 2,500 fans will be allowed to attend on each day.
