Trainer Willie Mullins landed the Tote Galway Plate for the second time in his career when Royal Rendezvous landed the spoils under jockey Paul Townend.
Last year’s runner-up rocketed home to first place under Paul Townend to hand Mullins the prize for the first time since 2011.
Royal Rendezvous looked strong throughout the 2m6½f race, powering home after the last two fences in the dip to finish ahead of Easy Game and Modus.
Speaking after the race, Mullins said:
” He jumped fantastic, galloped the whole way sort of with the choke out, I thought he was doing too much throughout the race”.
“The jumping was so good, Paul (Townend) was able to give him a breather after a lot of the fences on the second circuit”.
“He was electric and you need to be when you’re that fast in front, if you make one mistake you get hauled back into a pack and you don’t get out of it again but Paul was very sure on him and he was very confident in his jumping and he kept him there”.
