Ellen Keane is Ireland’s first gold medallist of the Paralympics after an astounding performance in Tokyo.
The Dublin woman came home first in the SB8 100m breaststroke final on Thursday morning to add yet another medal to her haul of remarkable achievements.
Keane had previously won a bronze medal at the Rio Games in 2016 but was not to be denied in her pursuit of gold this time around as she clocked a personal best time of 1.19.93 as she proved too strong for her rivals.
It is the highlight of the 26-year-old’s career as she overcame the challenge of New Zealander Sarah Pascoe to clinch the gold medal.
Pascoe finished second behind Keane, with Russia’s Adelina Razetdinova taking home the bronze medal.
Keane’s victory gets Team Ireland off the mark for the Tokyo Games as Ireland claimed their first medal in spectacular fashion.
