Davy Fitzgerald to be snubbed by Galway as unlikely candidate looks set to be appointed new senior manager

Former Waterford, Clare and Wexford manager Davy Fitzgerald is not in contention to be appointed to the post of Galway senior hurling manager with minor boss Brian Hanley the current favourite to be given the top job in his native county.

The shortlist for the job has been narrowed down to two candidates following last week’s news that 2017 All-Ireland winning manager Micheál Donoghue was not interested in a second spell in charge of the Tribesmen.

However, it is believed that Fitzgerald has been overlooked in favour of either Hanley or former U20 manager Jeffrey Lynskey with both receiving club nominations.

Interviews will begin this week as the prolonged search to replace Shane O’Neill looks set to come to a much-needed conclusion from a Galway perspective.

Former Westmeath manager Hanley is seen as the clear favourite for the job having guided the Galway minors to two consecutive All-Ireland titles in 2019 and 2020.

Lynskey is the alternative for a Galway County Board who will be desperate to fill the managerial position in as soon a time frame as is feasibly possible.

He stepped down from the U20 job with the western county in August and led the Galway minor team to three All-Ireland successes during his time in charge.

An announcement is expected to be made at some stage next week regarding the appointment of the new Galway manager.
