Kilkenny man David McClure was crowned European freestyle kayaking champion at the weekend.
The European Championships have been taking place in Paris and David and Kevin O’Connor have both been part of Team Ireland.
Kevin’s father and Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club member James O’Connor was quick to point out the contributions of the club and its founding members when discussing the duo’s success.
“We are very fortunate that the club has helped juniors and started juniors on their way to kayaking,” said James.
“We’re blessed to have a lot of instructors and people down through the years including Roger McClure (David’s dad) who probably started kayaking years ago and has been a stalwart of the club in Kilkenny”.
“We’re very fortunate and the benefit of that and the results of that are to be seen in Paris (winning the competition)”
