Tennis great Roger Federer has confirmed that he will not compete at the first grand slam of the year in January with the Australian Open coming too soon in his recovery from injury.
Speaking to Le Matin, the Swiss native also clarified when his return to the court is currently scheduled for having suffered serious knee injuries in recent years.
The 20-time grand slam champion has not played since his quarter-final defeat at Wimbledon on July 7.
He said: “I will be able to resume running quietly in January and resume sessions on the court with complex support in March or April.
“Today, I therefore estimate my return to competition in the summer of 2022. I would be extremely surprised if I could play Wimbledon.”
