Davy Fitzgerald could be set for a sensational return to intercounty management with reports circulating on Thursday that he is the frontrunner to become a coach with the Cork senior camogie team.

Fitzgerald would work as a backroom team member with last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists under the guidance of new manager Matthew Twomey.

Twomey hails from Douglas and has worked with former manager Paudie Murray in the past. He is the current favourite to replace Murray in the vacant managerial role.

A Cork camogie board meeting was supposed to take place on Wednesday night. However, that meeting was postponed hours before it was set to commence, with the discussion set to be about the new management team.

Following Murray will be a tough task for his successor with the new Cork minor hurling manager having won four All-Ireland titles since his appointment in 2012.

There is currently a five-person selection committee in place tasked with finding the right manager to lead the side into the future. That committee includes former players Rena Buckley and Linda Mellerick, and former chairperson Marian McCarthy.

Fitzgerald has previously managed Waterford, Clare and Wexford, winning every honour availavable in the men’s intercounty game since his venture into management in 2008.
