Waterford’s week of woes has finished with relegation from the SSE Airtricity Premier Division.

Taking their place will be UCD who saw Kilkenny’s Colm Whelan along with fellow county man Dara Keane carve the Blues apart to seal their return to the top flight of Irish football.

Waterford, managerless after Marc Bircham’s sacking earlier this week, took the lead after five minutes with a good finish into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

20 minutes later, UCD were level, Liam Kerrigan making room for himself on the right edge of the box to slice a pass through the Waterford defence with former Evergreen man Dara Keane waiting on the back post to fire home.

Keane turned provider not ten minutes later, trying to find a pass out of trouble at the back post, his attempt was swatted into the path of the on-rushing Colm Whelan to tap home from close range and turn the game on its head.

What a comeback by @UCDAFC – The Students now lead!

Who else? Colm Whelan was in the right place, at the right time, to tap the ball home. A big turnaround at Richmond Park…!@WaterfordFCie 1-2 @UCDAFC

2-1 is how the game would play out, Waterford’s misery compounded by a late sending off that saw them reduced to 10 men with four minutes to go.

The result means Waterford will spend the 2022 season back in the SSE Airtricity First Division while UCD can look forward to Premier Division football once more.
