Joe Canning has been appointed as a selector for the Galway minor hurling team.

The Galway legend retired from intercounty hurling following his county’s championship defeat to Waterford earlier this year but there was widespread speculation that he may return to the senior ranks next year.

That no longer seems like a realistic prospect, however, with the 33-year-old moving into coaching with the next generation of hurlers from his native county.

The Portumna man is not the only new member of the minor coaching set-up as Galway look to reclaim the All-Ireland crown that they lost to Cork in 2021.

A statement issued on Friday read: “The Galway U20 and U17 hurling management have added to their backroom teams for 2022.

“Brian Hanley will be joined by Fergal Lynch, Ciaran Callanan and Keith Daniels.

“U17 manager Fergal Healy has added Mark Kerins, Eamon Cleary, Padraig Duddy and Joe Canning to his management team for the coming season.

“We wish the new management teams and players every success in 2022.”
