While their draw with Kilkenny on Saturday afternoon edged them into next weekend’s Walsh Cup final with Dublin, Wexford manager Darragh Egan was more concerned with his side’s high performance levels at Chadwick’s Wexford Park.
Speaking after the game, Egan said that he was delighted with the competitive edge to the game.
He said: “It was a great workout and I’m very happy with it to be honest. There were a lot of elements of our play that were very good.
“It’s the 22nd of January and there were top class conditions out there today and we’re happy that we got the two scores at the end to advance into the final.”
There was some confusion about how the game would be concluded with many believing that extra-time would be needed to decide the winner of the group.
However, Tipperary native Egan knew that a draw would be enough to book their spot in the decider.
“We knew that the game was run on a league basis so we were confident in the knowledge that a draw would get us into the final even though we weren’t panicking with getting those final scores.
“Ultimately, we are delighted to get into the final and get another game under our belts before the league campaign begins,” said Egan.
Despite the positive result, the rookie manager lamented some parts of his team’s game that need to improve if they are to progress through both the league and championship.
“We need to work on our shape and structure. When that goes, like it did today when Kilkenny got on top, we seem to be under a lot of pressure.
“We have a good bit of stuff to tidy up on the training field but we showed great character to get the draw in the end.”
