The Hurler – hurling movie to be shot in the South East

Yes, a comedy film based around the crazy world of hurling is finally happening.

The story is set around Ireland’s most notorious hurler, Gar Campion. One of the most decorated and controversial figures in the game found himself embroiled in the biggest scandal to ever hit the Gaelic Games.

Gar is then forced to take a job coaching a new hurling team of misfits to pay back a debt and along the way runs into an old flame. Armed with a love for hurling and chicken nuggets, can Gar get back to his high status, or more importantly, does he want to?

The film is based on the multi-award-winning web series, “The Hurler” and the one-man show “The Hurler: An Audience with Gar Campion” which sold out multiple nights in Garter Lane, Waterford.

Speaking with the writer, actor, and director of the project Tony Kelly, he had this to say;

“After over four years of ups and downs, tryings and failings, stage adaptations and all different applications, oh, and a two-year global pandemic, this is FINALLY happening!”

“It’s all filming in Waterford, my hometown. So delighted to be working with so many wonderful people and a hugely talented, exciting, and internationally renowned cast.”

Names touted for the project include Jon Kenny from D’Unbelievables, Dave McSavage from the Savage Eye, and Elva Trill fresh off the set of the new Jurassic World. Local Kilkenny Production Company Dicemen Productions shall be manning the camera and some post-production for the project, with a host of Kilkenny actors involved also.

You can find a recent collaboration between Dicemen Productions and Tony Kelly below :

Tune in this Saturday to hear Tony talk about the journey and excitement as he prepares to start shooting April 11th.
