Carlow sprinter Marcus Lawler will next Tuesday receive another accolade – that of third-level-scholar – as a recipient of an elite sports scholarship from the Institute of Technology Carlow.

He along with Women’s RBS 6 Nations lock Ciara Cooney, Waterford Hurling All-Star nominee Colin Dunford, Republic of Ireland Senior Women’s Soccer Internationals Rachel Graham and Claire O’Riordan and basketball ace Jason Killeen, all of whom are students at IT Carlow, are to be recognised as elite scholars for their huge contribution to sport.

Their scholarships will provide financial and academic support, mentoring, injury rehabilitation, strength & conditioning support, high performance coaching and access to the IT Carlow’s sports facilities.

At a ceremony at IT Carlow’s Barrow Centre, the Institute will award some 44 academic scholarships and 81 gold and elite sports scholarships for the 2015/2016 academic year to students who have distinguished themselves, both academically and through their sporting ability.

Amongst the academic scholars will be twin sisters Roisin and Caoimhe Simms from Laois who are studying honours degree programmes in early Childhood Education & Care and Sports Management & Coaching, respectively.

The academic scholarships presentation ceremony will take place at 11am in IT Carlow’s Barrow Centre. The presentation of sports scholarships will take place at 2.30pm in the Barrow Centre.
