Kilkenny’s Evergreen FC made a bit of history on Sunday evening by claiming the club’s first-ever Premier Cup.
In a repeat of the KCLR McCalmont Cup final matchup from a few ago, the Kells Road club met Thomastown United on Sunday evening in another cup decider featuring the rival clubs.
Sam Johnston got the breakthrough goal for Evergreen in the 38th minute at Derdimus Park, finding plenty of room for himself inside the left edge of the box to fire home at the near post and give the league champions a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
In an otherwise tightly-contested second half, it would be a Thomastown own goal late on that would kill off the game and ensure Evergreen A finish with a treble, including the league and KCLR McCalmont Cup trophies.
St. Canice’s miss out
Division 2 side St. Canice’s had a shot at their own treble after a terrific season for the city club.
They were narrowly beaten 1-0 by Leixlip U20s in Castledermot in Sunday’s early kick-off to decide the home for this year’s LFA Junior Plate.
Eddie Clifford’s side finish their season as Kilkenny & District League Division 2 league and cup champions.
