Tinryland coach Stephen O’Meara responds to comments about his side being too defensive

Two from two in the Carlow Senior Football Championship, but Tinryland's manager feels defensive label is off the mark

Tinryland Take Junior Title

The Carlow Senior Football Championship takes a bit of a break but it was an action-packed weekend

It was a dramatic finish to the Tinryland and Eire Og game as Danny Moran got the winning point for Tinryland on 64 minutes.

It marked two wins from two for Tinryland after they recorded a victory over Ballinabranna in the first round. Tinrylands Shane Redmond spoke to us before the championship kicked off and outlined the need to start gathering some steam from the very first game, something they have certainly done so far.

After the game, Tinryland coached Steve O’Meara was clearly delighted with the nail-biting finish but did have some concerns over the perception that his side is too defensive. Speaking to Scoreline the Ballyboughal, who was performance analysis with Galway when they won the Connacht S.F.C. title, had this to say;

“There have been a lot of comments around the county about Tinryland being defensive. There is a difference between being defensive and being defensively efficient and structured. Some people will like us to open up the Red Sea and invite teams to score.”

“We talk about pedestrian, and I am not having a go, the game was level in injury time and Eire Og had fifteen men in their own half. What do you do? Run into head first and get turned over? If teams want to come at us man-on-man, we will play them man-on-man. If teams want to drop off behind the ball and concede the kick out what are you going to do? There is no shot clock in football.”

“If you go head first into it, there will come and get you. It is like when you’re losing and start going for goals, they start defending goals. You start picking off a few points they have to come out after you.”

“I have counted up the times we played Eire Og, Palatine, and Rathvilly, which would be the bookie’s crystal clear top three. We have played 7 or 8 times and we lost every game.”
