Tullaroan have progressed to the St Canice’s Credit Union Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship semi-finals for the second consecutive year following a three-point victory against Erin’s Own at UPMC Nowlan Park on Saturday afternoon.
A cluster of points in the final ten-minutes proved crucial for the 2019 intermediate county champions as they found a way to get over the line with an economical rather than outstanding display.
The first half was a rather tepid affair as free-takers Shane Walsh and Jack Buggy came to the fore for both teams.
Neither side seemed capable of getting full control of the game as Walsh (four frees, three from play), Tomas Dunne and John Walton points gave Tullaroan a deserved 0-09 to 0-06 lead.
The second half lived up to expectations for a quarter-final clash in the Kilkenny senior championship as the league champions met the reality of knockout hurling against a team who were embroiled in a relegation scrap merely a week ago.
Buggy, Fogarty, Eoin Brennan and Kevin Holland brought Niall Rigney’s men level but Tullaroan refused to accept defeat and rallied primarily through the outstanding Walsh.
A number of points from Ken Coogan’s men towards the end of the game saw them brush aside the Erin’s Own challenge and become the first team to reach the semi-finals.
