Scoreline Morning Report

Let’s take a look at what’s making the headlines on KCLR and Scoreline for Tuesday 8 November, 2022.

Excitement for Muckalee

Excitement is building around Muckalee this week with the club heading for a Leinster Ladies junior football championship this weekend

Having exited at the quarter-final stages last year, they’ve been on a good run of form of late to set up a provincial decider against O’Dwyer’s of Dublin with the game heading to Baltinglass GAA grounds at one o’clock on Saturday. Speaking to KCLR, Muckalee’s Ellen Lawlor says the support for the ladies team has been growing with every game.

“I just feel that every time we go out there’s more support”, says Lawlor.

“There are more people getting excited for us and getting behind us. The county final this year was packed, the sideline was full of Muckalee people and the young people. That’s the main thing, the young girls coming to watch us play. They look up to us. It’s unreal watching them see us win and push behind us, it’s just great to see it in the club.”

SETU busy on the GAA front

SETU Carlow took a sizeable loss in the GAA Higher Education Senior Football Division 1 last night going down 2-12 to 0-04 against a strong DCU Dóchas Éireann in Dublin. However, Carlow game away with the goods in Monday night’s Freshers Hurling Division 2 game with a late burst sealing a 3-19 to 3-14 win over the same side.

There’s a host of action tonight for SETU Carlow with a junior football clash against Mary Immaculate Thurles, a Division 2 Football League clash with Maynooth, a Ladies Football Division 3 third-round fixture against DCU and a Division 2 camogie league semi-final against MTU Cork.

We’ll also see county trials for the Kilkenny minor camogie team heading to Thomastown from 6.15pm this evening while from 5.15pm the Netwatch Training Centre in Fenagh hosts the first of two evenings of Cumann na mBunscoil football finals for Carlow.

Free night of racing

Greyhound Racing Ireland will be hosting an open night at the races with free admission to Kilkenny Greyhound Stadium this Friday night under an initiative, entitled “Ag Rásaíocht Le Chéile” or “Racing Together”.

As part of13 events around the country over the weekend, friends, family members and those in the greyhound community who have passed away over the year will be remembered.

Minimum wage set for League of Ireland

Players in the League of Ireland look set for a significant wage boost ahead of the new season.

It was reported overnight that a minimum wage of €430 per week will be introduced, for all senior professional players over the age of 20. Negotiations involving PFA Ireland, the National League Committee and club representatives have been taking place. Per the Independent, that would ‘more that double’ the pay for some lower-paid squad members at certain clubs. Part time players on professional deals will be paid a minimum €130 per week.

Southampton, Liverpool and League Cup competition

Southampton are to begin talks with Nathan Jones about becoming their next manager after Luton’s game with Stoke this evening after they sacked Ralph Hassenhuttl yesterday.

Supporters organisations are seeking clarity from Liverpool as to whether their owners are looking to sell the Premier League club. Fenway Sports Group, who took over 12 years ago, say they are open to new investors. But the Americans insist they “remain fully committed to the success of Liverpool, both on and off the pitch”. The price tag, should the club go for full sale, could reach as high as £3.6bn.

The Carabao Cup kicks off tonight as well though for the KCLR Breakfast sports crew, Leeds and Liverpool aren’t out until tomorrow night. There’s one all Premier League tie among the games in the third round of the Carabao Cup tonight. Bournemouth host Everton at the Vitality, where kick off is at 7.45.

Lincoln City – managed by Mark Kennedy – take on Bristol City. Another Dubliner, Graham Coughlan, takes his Newport County side to Leicester. Elsewhere, Brentford entertain Gillingham, Crawley go to Burnley, MK Dons play Morecambe and Stevenage face Charlton.

And on the rugby front, Conor Murray has been ruled out of the remainder of the Autumn Nations Series with a groin injury, Ciaran Frawley won’t play either while Johnny Sexton remains doubtful.
