It has been confirmed that former Laois manager Seamus “Cheddar” Plunkett has taken charge of Kilkenny intermediate side St. Martins
The former James Stephens manager makes his return to Kilkenny after two years in charge with Laois.
The Muckalee club endured a difficult league campaign in the intermediate ranks this year but managed to put managed to stave off relegation in a semi-final decider against St. Lachtains, who eventually got relegated themselves after losing to Fenians in the relegation final.
Seamus took over the Laois job, for the second time, after Eddie Brennan resigned. However, taking charge during the pandemic was no doubt a difficult task. The O’Moore county was relegated from the Liam MacCarthy Cup after losing all of their five Leinster senior hurling championship round games, although they did manage to retain their division 1 status.
In a statement outlining his resignation Plunkett said:
“I wish to advise that I have informed CLG Laois that I will step away from managing Laois senior hurling team forthwith. There is a job of work to be done to bring Laois through the Joe McDonagh championship in 2023 and up to the levels of competing at the Leinster championship round-robin competition in 2024.”
