It’s Day 3 at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, so who’s playing who?
Well, after a busy enough day on Monday that saw England thump Iran, the Netherlands leave it late against Senegal and Wales rescue a point against the USA, we’ve got four games today to look forward to.
For football fans, it’s a busy day with the first game up at 10am, followed by games at 1pm, 4pm and 7pm giving you the bones of 12 hours of coverage.
The first game of the day is the Group C clash between Argentina and Saudi Arabia. Much is hoped for Argentina with Lionel Messi hoping to add a World Cup to last year’s Copa America victory and if ever there was a year for Argentina to claim another World Cup trophy, this is it. Four years ago they were dumped out of the last 16 by eventual winners France. They did make the final in 2014 though so there’s always hope.
Group D gets underway at 1pm at the Education City Stadium with Denmark expected to take a win over Tunisia. Two years after we all thought we had seen the end of Christian Eriksen, he’ll be back in the thick of it this afternoon with hopes riding high for Denmark that they’ll be involved in the knockout stages. Tunisia were close to doing a number on England at the last World Cup in Russia, also on their opening day, but this one has Denmark written all over it.
The second game in Group C kicks off at 4pm with Mexico ready to meet Poland. Another big name ready to shine on the World Cup stages is Robert Lewandowski, likely playing in his last tournament.
The final game of the day is the second Group D fixture that sees defending champions France take on Australia at the Al Janoub stadium. The French have been rocked by injuries on the run-in to the World Cup with Olivier Giroud expected to start up top in place of Karim Benzema. There’s no Pogba, no Kante, no Nkunku but the Mbappé factor is one they’ll be hoping to cash in on. Only two countries have successfully defended their World Cup title in the past – Italy (1938) and Brazil (1962). It’s not easy, competition is high and anything can happen.
