  • Gavi becomes the youngest World Cup goalscorer since Pele in 1958
  • The Barcelona midfielder’s World Cup goal, a brilliant volley with the outside of the foot that went in off a post, came at the age of 18 years and 110 days.
  • Pele scored against Wales in a 1958 quarter-final at the age of 17 years and 249 days.
  • Norman Whiteside is the youngest-ever player to appear in the World Cup. He turned up for Ireland against Yugoslavia in 1982, when he was 17 years and 41 days.

Today, Switzerland and Cameroon open proceedings in Group G from 10 am Irish time.

Elsewhere in that Group, Brazil plays Serbia at 7 pm.

Brazil is the tournament’s favorite but hasn’t won the competition in 20 years.

In Group H, it’s Uruguay versus South Korea at 1 o’clock – Tottenham’s Heung Min Son is fit to play for the Asian side.

The other match in that Group sees Portugal up against Ghana at 4 pm.

Cristiano Ronaldo is set to start for the Portuguese days after it was announced he was leaving Manchester United.

  2. Sir Jim Ratcliffe
  3. Elon Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual with a net worth of just over $200bn [£167bn], joked in August he would like to buy United but his recent takeover of Twitter may well keep him busy.
  4. Jim O’Neill and the Red Knights, Lord O’Neill led the so-called Red Knights group of investors that tried to buy the club back in 2010.
  5. US private equity investors – According to research by consultancy Deloitte, the US has been the source of more than two-thirds of investments in Europe’s biggest leagues over the past five years, with an “influx of private equity interest”.
