Not even a brass monkey would have chanced a game in the weather this past weekend, but for junior soccer in Kilkenny and Carlow we managed to see two games go ahead before the winter break sets in for the men’s game.
Both leagues had already announced that the majority of games, except those playable on all-weather surfaces, would be scrapped.
On Sunday, Sean Grace hit four, while Scoreline’s own Robbie Dowling along with Owen Wall, Billy Hayes and Jamie O’Keeffe hit one each as Castlewarren Celtic put eight goals past Thomastown United B in Division 2 of the Kilkenny & District League, that game preserved by the Watershed’s astro pitch.
Evergreen’s all-weather facilities also came to the rescue in the Emerald Tiles Division 3 of the Kilkenny & District League as they played out a scoreless draw with East End.
That result pushes Castlewarren to the top of the league with six wins from 9, the most games play by any team at this point of the year. Evegreen C are three points behind in second, albeit with a game in hand, while River Rangers have four games to catch up on.
With a winter break set to kick in, there are still a number of underage fixtures scheduled for today at U14 and U18 level in Kilkenny with more underage fixtures still in the diary for next weekend along with an outstanding fixture between Thomastown United and Lions in the St. Canice’s Credit Union Women’s League.
The KCLR Carlow Shield, Douglas Jewellers Carlow Cup and Nationalist Premier Division in Carlow will all see action from Wednesday through Sunday of this week.
