Jockey Davy Russell has come out of retirement less than a month after hanging up the saddle.
With Jack Kennedy out with a broken leg, Russell is to help trainer Gordon Elliott by race riding from this weekend.
43-year-old Russell may now compete at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
So with this news, we thought we would look back at some coming out-of-retirement success stories.
DJ Carey: Hurling
Back in 1998, DJ Carey shocked not only the county but the whole GAA community by announcing his retirement at the age of 27. Stress was the purported reason for the widely regarded best hurler in the country. In an interview on RTÉ Radio the Gowran man citing a loss of “appetite” for the game as his primary reason. Over the following few weeks, Carey received 25,000 letters from all over the country encouraging him not to retire. It must have worked as just six weeks later Carey was back.
DJ ended up retiring for good in 2005 with three more All-Ireland titles, three All Star awards and a second Hurler of the Year award in his back pocket
Paul Scholes: Soccer

Michael Schumacher: Formula 1

Randy Couture: UFC
Embed from Getty ImagesRandy Couture decided to retire from the world of MMA in 2006. But one year later at the age of 43, Couture was signed by UFC to step back inside the Octagon. He then went onto win another UFC heaveyweight title yet after defeating Tim Sylvia. Couture fought his last fight against Lyoto Machida in April 2011 at the age of 47.
Michael Jordan: Basketball

Just two years later though, Phil Jackson had him back in the fold so the Bulls could charge towards a historic three-peat. Which was achieved with the likes of Scotty Pippen and Dennis Rodman also in the rank.
Jordon retired again in 1999 but returned as a player-coach in 2000.
