Monday morning rolls around again and we’ve got plenty happening in the world of sport today coming off a busy weekend of Walsh Cup, Kehoe Cup and local soccer action.

Cats win again
Derek Lyng continued his winning start as Kilkenny senior hurling manager as the Cats saw off Laois in Rathdowney yesterday to make it two wins from two in the Walsh Cup. 3-31 to 2-21 is how the game finished, the sides going score-for-score in the first half before Kilkenny peeled away in the second half.
There’s always the argument around pre-season competitions as to their value but given the changing of the guard in Kilkenny, there’s added interest in this month’s cup, plus it still provides a chance to experiment, get some good competitive games under the belt before tackling the league. Speaking to Scoreline after the game, manager Derek Lyng suggested he was grateful to get more minutes into his panel’s legs. Wexford’s win over Offaly yesterday means Kilkenny pretty much need to avoid defeat this coming Saturday night to set up a trip to Croke Park for the Walsh Cup final where Henry Shefflin’s Galway await.
Back-to-back wins for Carlow
Carlow picked up their second win in this year’s Kehoe Cup with a strong performance against Down in Abbottstown on Sunday
They’ll meet again later in the season but given that results against Down haven’t gone swimmingly in recent years, this will be a good win. There was a good work rate on show, a couple of standout performances and a goal from Conor Kehoe helped Tom Mullally’s side to a 1-25 to 1-20 victory. Carlow will play Meath in Netwatch Cullen Park this Sunday from 2pm.
On the football front, congratulations again to Myshall, Naomh Eoin beating Michael Davitts to start the weekend off as Carlow U20 B football champions while in Kilkenny, James Stephens made sure of senior football for the season ahead as they got the better of Conahy in their relegation final.
Leinster camogie championships drawn
The Leinster Camogie convention was held in Kilkenny over the weekend which among other things saw Kilkenny Camogie vice chair and Camán Caint host Martin Quilty named as Cathaoirleach Tofa for this year, the plan being to take over the office from Carlow’s Linda Kenny in 2024.
It also saw the draw for the provincial championships made. You can get full details of these fixtures on Scoreline.ie this morning with defending Leinster and All-Ireland senior champions Kilkenny picking up a bye to the semi-final stages this year where they’ll meet either Offaly or Westmeath.
Congratulations also to Loreto Secondary School who took the Leinster senior A camogie title in a tough game over Pres Kilkenny at the weekend.
Women lead the pack
Kilkenny Women had a big win in Division 4 of the Leinster League yesterday, putting 68 points on the board and shutting out Wanderers Women at the same time. They’ll have this coming weekend off before returning to action at the end of the month. It didn’t go as well for the men’s side over the weekend, they let a 15-0 lead slip with 10 minutes to go against Suttonians on Saturday, falling to a 17-15 defeat.
Carlow had a comfortable 20-7 win over Athy at the weekend to get back to winning ways while Tullow picked up a losing bonus point against Mullingar, 22-21 that one finished to leave Tullow second in the table.
No fear for New Oak
Last week, the draw for the LFA Senior Cup was made with Carlow’s New Oak Boys being paired with Bray Wanderers. New Oak, who recorded a 5-0 victory over Ballymurphy Celtic yesterday to remain top of the Nationalist Premier Division, will be welcoming the League of Ireland side to the Burrin Road before the end of the month. Arsenal are top of the Premier League table this morning by eight points thanks to a 2-0 win over Spurs yesterday and United’s 2-1 comeback win over City on Saturday. Newcastle are up to third again after beating Fulham 1-0 on Sunday while Chelsea picked up their first win of the new year with a 1-0 defeat of Crystal Palace.

Davy Russell is back in action, out of retirement, likely heading to Gowran for Thyestes Day and back with a winner for Gordon Elliot at Punchestown yesterday.
