Coming off a weekend where titles were won and lost and some big results were posted in the Premier League, let’s take a look at some of the headlines doing the rounds on KCLR and Scoreline.ie for Monday 6 March.
Carlow bounce back
Beginning with Gaelic games and Carlow’s trip to Ruislip yesterday to take on London proved fruitful and added some much-needed points on the board in the Allianz Football League. While it won’t do much to change Carlow’s position in the league table, it does help add weight to Saturday week’s clash with Sligo at Netwatch Cullen Park.
Carlow left McGovern Park with a 13-point-to-nine win – Darragh Foley claiming seven of those – but were again reduced to 14 players during the game, something that manager Niall Carew seems keen to address. You can hear his thoughts in the latest edition of Scoreline Extra below.
In other football news, we’ve got two new minor football champions in Kilkenny.
Thomastown beat St. Martin’s 1-10 to 1-3 yesterday to claim this year’s Kilkenny Vehicle Centre Minor A football title while the minor B title is going to St. Patrick’s after a 4-5 to 2-4 win over Emeralds in Urlingford.
Carlow’s ladies finished their National League campaign yesterday on a losing note. Trailing 4-10 to 1-4 at half time, they were beaten in the end 6-16 to 2-07 by an impressive Antrim side who now progress to the Division 4 semi-finals against
Leinster champions
Kilkenny are this year’s Leinster minor A camogie champions thanks to a 3-15 to 1-12 win against Dublin yesterday.
With a two point lead at half time, second-half goals from Lauren Ronan and Katie Brennan helped seal a win that manager Mick Wall says is just what they need ahead of a busy few weeks in the championship. You can hear more on that story online later today.
One game to go
Tullow are one game away from winning this year’s Leinster League Division 1B. They ran in 11 tries against Dundalk yesterday for a 69-26 win at home and take on Cill Dara in two weeks’ time knowing a win will see them promoted to Division 1A.
They’ll be boosted by Carlow’s 22-6 win over Cill Dara, a result that leaves Carlow fourth though in with a shout of finishing third.
Kilkenny were beaten 41-25 at home to Boyne on Saturday and while they picked up a bonus point in the loss, they’re back in a possible promotion/relegation playoff spot with one game left to play against Dublin’s Seapoint.
Fifth place finish
Sophie Becker, Sharlene Mawdsley, Kilkenny’s Cliodhna Manning and Phil Healy were fifth in the final of the Women’s 4-by-400 metres relay at the European Indoor Championships in Istanbul yesterday.
Local soccer
Locally, Freebooters will be joining Kilkenny’s Thomastown and Carlow’s New Oak Boys in the next round of the Leinster Junior Cup. Two goals each from David Rice and Jim Ryan helped the city side to a 4-2 win over Dublin’s River Valley Rangers yesterday. Evergreen used their time at home yesterday to put five past Clover United in the St. Canice’s Credit Union Premier Division, moving level on points with Freebooters but with a game in hand.
In Carlow, St. Pat’s Boys put up one of the biggest wins of the Carlow Nationalist Premier Division this season with a 6-0 victory over Ballymurphy Celtic.
Watch: Liverpool hammer United at Anfield
And in case anyone missed it, can we just take a moment to acknowledge Liverpool’s magnificent 7-0 victory over Man United at Anfield on Sunday? Taking a 1-0 lead into the break thanks to a Cody Gakpo finish just before half-time, Liverpool put six past United in the following 45 minutes to hand Erik ten Hag’s side their heaviest-ever Premier League defeat and biggest league loss since the 1930s.
