This past weekend proved to be an exciting one across Carlow and Kilkenny for championship action so let’s start Monday’s morning report with a look back at some of the Gaelic games action over Saturday and Sunday.
In Kilkenny, while the senior hurlers had the weekend off, it was over to the county’s intermediate and senior camogie sides with a view to closing out the Leinster championships.
For the intermediates, Seamus Kelly’s side were full value for their win over Wexford on Saturday and with Peter Chap Cleere’s Carlow taking a win over Wicklow in Dunlavin, it means that this weekend we’re going to see Kilkenny take on Carlow for the Leinster intermediate title.
That game has been confirmed for 2.30pm this coming Saturday at the SETU sports grounds in Carlow. However, given Carlow’s Tailteann Cup commitments at 3pm on Saturday against Limerick, Carlow GAA PRO Ger Doyle has since told KCLR they’ll be looking for a change in times to try and avoid a clash.
For Kilkenny’s seniors, it was the late late show for Julieann Malone who managed a stoppage-time goal to ensure Brian Dowling’s side retain their Leinster crown with a 1-14 to 0-13 win over Dublin. It will be June before they’re back in action for the start of the All-Ireland series but speaking to KCLR on her role in the win, Malone told us of her delight in getting past Dublin again. Croke Park awaits
Carlow’s senior hurlers have booked a trip to Croke Park for the end of the month thanks to a 1-29 to 0-14 win over Offaly on Saturday. The final will be a repeat of that game but Offaly played things clever, making 11 changes to their starting lineup having already secured a place in the Joe McDonagh Cup decider. Carlow still had to get the win though, and they did with plenty of room to spare. Speaking to KCLR, Jack Kavanagh is looking forward to a final appearance but also has his eyes set on the All-Ireland series. Again, you can hear from Jack on the latest Scoreline Extra.
On the football side of things, Carlow traveled to Aughrim to take on Wicklow in their opening game of the Tailteann Cup yesterday. Level at six points apiece at half time, Wicklow roared into to a five-point lead in the second half but Carlow clawed it back, Jonah Dunne getting the final score of the game for Carlow to steal a 17-point to 1-13 win with the last play of the game to give Niall Carew’s side their first win over Wicklow in three attempts this season.

Elsewhere, Carlow’s ladies were beaten in round 3 of the Leinster intermediate football championship, Longford’s experience ultimately helping them over the line with a 1-11 to 0-08 win.
Soccer seasons coming to a close
New Oak Boys will be celebrating well into the week after completing back-to-back quadruples at the weekend. A 3-1 win over Parkville United including a hat-trick for Cody Mulhall means New Oak wrap up their domestic season with all four local trophies on offer to them. In Kilkenny, Castlewarren Celtic were awarded the Ken & Michael Byrne Division 2 Cup on a walkover from Freshford on Saturday.
Yesterday saw the semi-finals of the KCLR McCalmont Cup play out. Evergreen 46 were the first side into the final, beating Callan United 4-3 on penalties after the game finished 2-2 in normal time. Goals from Harry Jordan and Sean Bolger helped Freebooters to a 2-0 win over Deen Celtic to join Evergreen 46 in the final, which is looking like a June bank holiday weekend fixture.
Commiserations to Kilkenny United’s Girls Under 12s, beaten 3-1 by Home Farm in their SFAI Trophy Final yesterday. Some of the team were in with Sue during the week, they’ve had a great run of games this season, and hopefully a sign of more good things to come at underage level.
And in the Premier League, the title race looks all but over after Arsenal imploded against Brighton yesterday leaving City needing just a win in their next game to make it league titles in a row after they beat Everton 3-0 yesterday.
West Ham still aren’t mathematically safe, they lost 2-0 to Brentford and tonight then sees Leicester host Liverpool. A win for Leicester gets them out of relegation, a win for Liverpool puts them back to a point off fourth albeit leaving Man United with a game in hand.
