Carlow LGFA junior team took on Kilkenny Juniors in the LGFA Leinster Finals at Laois Hire O’Moore Park at the weekend, recording a huge victory in the process.
Carlow’s ladies footballers enjoyed provincial success at the weekend when they were crowned Leinster junior champions with a massive win over Kilkenny. Carlow found themselves pulling clear early on, Clíodhna Ní Shé hitting the back of the net twice while Sinéad Hayden had a goal disallowed. By half time, Kate Furlong, Edel Hayden and Sara Doyle had also added their names to the scoresheet, Carlow going into the break 2-10 to 0-03 ahead.
It’s worth remembering that this is still Kilkenny’s first run at the provincial championship in a few years and, having only re-entered the national leagues in Division 4 earlier the year, it was always going to be a big ask to get a result against Carlow at this level. While Kilkenny kept working hard on the pitch, Carlow kept an eye on goal for the second half with Sara Doyle, Emma Coogan, and Bronagh Nolan all hitting the back of the net on the way to a 5-20 to 0-06 victory.
The next stage for both sides is the TG4 All-Ireland Championship with the groups having been announced recently, Kilkenny has been drawn into Group A with Sligo, Limerick, and Down while Carlow has been drawn into Group B with Derry, London, and Fermanagh
The TG4 All-Ireland Finals are scheduled for Croke Park on August 13th.
