We’re running out of weather lines to start the morning headlines but at least while it’s a sunny start to the day across Carlow and Kilkenny, let’s take a look at some of the stories making the news for KCLR and Scoreline.ie for your Monday.
Beginning with Gaelic games and it’s the end of the road for Carlow’s senior hurlers and footballers. Saturday was a huge occasion for hurling in the county, we had a great buzz at Scoreline’s live show in Reddy’s in the afternoon, the crowd right behind Carlow to the end of the game.
Leading by a point at half-time, Dublin just had more in the tank, plus second-half goals from Mark Grogan and Cian O’Sullivan helped matters, Dublin running out 2-25 to 0-21. For the county’s leader in the all-time scoring charts, St. Mullins’ Marty Kavanagh is grateful for this season’s memories and can’t wait to get stuck into the club championship. That club championship will launch this coming Wednesday evening at Netwatch Cullen Park with the club hurling season in Carlow underway from next weekend.
On the football front, it’s all over until next year for Niall Carew’s side. They were in Belfast for our live game against Antrim yesterday, the hosts coming away with a 1-19 to 1-15 win to move into the semi-finals of the Tailteann Cup. For Carew, there’s a lot more still to come from his Carlow side and you can hear his thoughts also on the latest Scoreline Extra podcast.
Antrim join Meath, Laois and Down in the draw for the last four, getting underway in Dublin around about now.
The draw for the preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland senior football championship are also being made with Donegal, Galway, Kildare and Cork all set for home advantage; Mayo, Monaghan, Roscommon and Tyrone all in the mix.
And some bad news for Limerick this morning, county captain Declan Hannon set to miss the county’s ALl-Ireland hurling semi-final next month after picking up a knee injury in their Munster final win over Clare.
Ladies Football
In ladies’ football, Kilkenny’s return to the TG4 All-Ireland junior championship ended in a heavy defeat to Limerick at John Locke Park in Callan yesterday, Iris Kennelly hitting 3-5 for Limerick on the way to a 7-21 to 1-5 win.
Carlow too were edged by Fermanagh in a much closer affair as they went down 1-13 to 0-9. Derry are next for Carlow while Kilkenny face a trip to Down. Both of those games come with a 2pm throw-in on Sunday 2 July.
McIlroy misses out
We’re left asking just what Rory McIlroy has to do to win another major. His best chance in years ended in defeat by a single stroke as he carded a 70 last night to finish on -9 for the week. Wyndham Clark took the honours with a -10 finish for his first major title.
There was better news though for Ireland’s Leona Maguire. The Cavan native posts a final total of 21-under to claim her second LPGA Tour win and the Meijer LPGA Class in Michigan last night.
Destination Dublin for Gibraltar
Spain are the Nations League champions having beaten Croatia 5-4 in a penalty shootout in the final last night, that one having finished goalless after extra time in Rotterdam.
Brendan Rodgers should be confirmed as Celtic’s new manager later today in what will be his second stint in charge after four seasons at now-relegated Leicester. It’s being reported this morning that his contract at Celtic should eclipse his previous deal and make him the club’s highest-paid manager ever, again.
And the Republic of Ireland take on Gibraltar tonight hopeful of a first win in their Euro 2024 campaign. After last week’s horror show in Greece, we’re back in Dublin, kick-off is 7.45. France take on Greece at the same time.
