It was a busy weekend of games in the Michael Lyng Motors Hyundai Intermediate Championship, there was a double header of finals in UPMC Nowlan Park as the league and shield finals were played. Dunnamaggin got the better of St Martins in the shield final while Thomastown kept their perfect form up with victory over Lisdowney in the league decider.
In the first-round games and relegations semi-finals, there were two games down for decision, Conahy Shamrocks beat O Loughlin Gaels while after a thrilling match yesterday, Fenians defeated Carrickshock which means that O Loughlin Gaels will play Carrickshock in this year’s relegation final with the losers dropping to the junior grade in 2024. The draw was also done for the quarter-finals of this year’s championship was done in UPMC Nowlan Park last night
In Carlow the Michael Lyng Motors Senior football championship quarter-finals took place, Bagenalstown Gaels defeated Old Leighlin by two points while Éire Óg defeated Mount Leinster Rangers in the other quarter-final, the draw was also done for the semi-finals yesterday too
In the Intermediate Championship, the semi-final draws have also been done
Camogie
The Michael Lyng Motors Senior league will be contested between Piltown and Dicksboro after both teams won their respective semi-finals against Windgap and James Stephens respectively. The Intermediate league will see city club O Loughlin Gaels go up against Rower Inistioge after both teams came through their semi-finals against Mooncoin and St Lachtains, while in the junior grade, there was drama in the second of the semi-finals as John Lockes/Bennettsbridge and Dicksboro went to extra extra time before a winner was decided, the combined team coming away with the victory in the end and they will play Graiguenamanagh as they defeated Tullogher in the first of the junior semi-finals.
In other Camogie news the PWC All-Star nominations have been announced this morning, Kilkenny has three nominations in Grace Walsh, Claire Phelan, and Denise Gaule. All-Ireland champions Cork has eleven nominations, Waterford has nine, Galway has seven and Tipperary six. The nominations for Senior Player of the Year have also been announced with Amy O’Connor, Beth Carton, and Saoirse McCarthy fighting it out for the honour.
Tennis
Ireland has secured a Davis Cup World Group 1 playoff spot after victory over the weekend in Sonsonate defeating El Salvador 4-1. The draw will take place on Wednesday 20th September.
Rugby
Ireland made it two wins from two at this year’s Rugby World Cup in France as they defeated Tonga 59-16. Ireland pushed on in the second half to secure a try bonus point win. The result means Ireland stays top of Pool B one point ahead of the Springboks who Ireland plays next. Fiji have pulled off a massive victory over the weekend over the Aussies which mean if Australia lose their next game their World Cup will be over and will fail to qualify for the knock-out stages.
