We had six live games on KCLR over the weekend in Kilkenny, there was important games for some clubs as they fought in a relegation battle, other teams have now qualified for the quarter-finals and there is some teams that are now finished hurling for the year at adult level. In the senior championship Danesfort will face Erins Own in this years relegation final after they both suffered defeats in the semi-finals over the weekend.
The draws were also done live last night on KCLR for the senior quarter finals of this years championship also the semi finals of the intermediate championship and the first round draws for the junior championship
In Carlow we had four live football games over the weekend. In the Intermediate championship semi-finals there was wins for Clonmore over Grange and St Patricks over Éire Óg. In the Senior semi-finals there was a win for Tinryland over Bagenalstown Gaels in a very low scoring game, while in the other semi-final there was drama all the way as Éire Óg and Rathvilly couldn’t be separated after full time or even extra time, it took a sudden death penalty shoot-out to see who would contest this years Senior final, Josh Brady scored the defining penalty to win the game for Éire Óg, they will now face Tinryland in this years Final
Golf
Team Europe have retained the Solheim Cup after a 14-14 tie with the USA, the tournament was held in Finca Cortesin golf resort in Spain this year. Both teams went into the last day’s singles tied at 8-8. Leona Maguire was on sensational form for and European captain Suzann Pettersen put the Irishwoman out first to try and get some blue on the board. Maguire demolished Rose Zhang 4&3 after a fabulous eagle on the 14th to put Europe ahead, Spanish player Carlota Ciganda grabbed the headlines on the last day after her putt on the 17th beat Nelly Korda 2&1 and claim the all-important 14th point in front of her home fans to retain the trophy.
More good news for Gowran Park over the weekend as the ladies brought back another All-Ireland to Kilkenny, the club won their first AIG Women’s Intermediate Cup title one week after winning the Revive Active Women’s Fourball. Mother and Daughter Helena and Orla McCormack was on great form as both picked up a win for their team while Ashleigh Boote secured another point with a 5&4 win to secure glory for Gowran Park. Team Captain Sinead Kearney spoke to media after the event “It’s just, I can’t put it into words. We have a great, great group of girls. We’re a small club and we’re just so delighted, they all played so well today and they’re a great bunch and we’re just going home tonight to Kilkenny, over the moon it’s just brilliant.”
Rugby
Ireland are now four points clear in Pool B of this years Rugby World Cup after their bruising victory over South Africa on Saturday night. The Stade De France was awash with green as the top two in the world went up against each other in what has been described as the game of the tournament so far. The result means that victory over Scotland in two weeks time will guarantee Ireland will will progress to the quarter finals as group winners. In the other big news of the tournament Wales beat Australia last night 40-6 which means the Wallabies will fail to qualify for the knockout stages for the first time in their history.
Domestically, Kilkenny RFC got off to a winning start in the Leinster League 1B after defeating Cill Dara in Foulkstown yesterday in the first round of the League. Kilkenny had dropped down from the 1A last season and will be hoping to get promotion this year. County Carlow lost out in their first game against Athy as they fell to a 37-22 defeat.
Tullow kept their winning start to their 1A league with a narrow one point victory over Bective Rangers in Black Gates on Saturday. The Carlow side were promoted last season and are going very well in the early stages of the campaign.
