According to KCLR Breakfast, it’s a “good looking” start to the day on the weather front around Kilkenny and Carlow so let’s see what’s happening in the world of sport.
Beginning with live sport and we’ll be getting our match coverage underway at 1.30pm tomorrow where we’re off to Glenisk O’Connor Park in Tullamore with Rapid Fire Safety and Security Services to bring you full commentary of O’Loughlin Gaels and Offaly senior champions Kilcormac-Killoughy. Ahead of that game, O’Loughlin’s manager and seven-time All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny Brian Hogan has been telling KCLR he wouldn’t swap Saturday’s clash for anything in the world – that interview you can hear on Scoreline just after 6pm this evening with Robbie.
Then on Saturday evening, we’ve got Oisin Langan and former Irish international Mick Quinn calling the hits as Leinster and Munster get set for a showdown in round six of the URC. Kick-off is at 6.30pm and coverage live from the Aviva Stadium is thanks to Dan Morrissey and co.
On Sunday afternoon the attention turns to the the JJ Kavanagh & Sons Kilkenny Under 21A hurling champion where we bring you full coverage of Dunnamaggin and Dicksboro, live from Dunnamaggin at 2pm, with thanks to PM Security. We’ll also have updates from the weekend’s other Leinster and Under 21 games including Thomastown and Tullogher-Rosbercon’s provincial intermediate and junior hurling championship semi-finals.
Power out
In golf, Kilkenny’s Mark Power has missed the cut at the Australian PGA Championship. Power was best of the Irish yesterday, carding a -2 with a round of 69 but when play resumed at 20 to 2 this morning Irish time, he started with back-to-back bogeys, adding a double on the 9th and one more on his way out on the 18th to finish with 75 for the day and move to 2 over.
With Min Woo Lee leading the way on -12, the cut proved par, leaving Power sitting out the weekend rounds on his first visit to Australia as a professional golfer.
Player of the Year
Voting continues in this year’s Camán Caint Player of the Year awards. Three individual awards for the senior, intermediate and junior grade players are being contested as part of the overall Team of the Year awards. The winners will be revealed at a special live event taking place at O’Loughlin Gaels GAA club on Friday December 1st. Voting closes at midnight this Saturday and you can only cast yours here.
Championship football
The Carlow Under 20 football championships gets going tonight with games in the A championship getting proceedings underway. Michael Davitts host Bagenalstown Gaels while St. Patrick’s welcome Rathvilly to Tullow, both games throwing in at 8pm.
There are a further six games down for decision across Saturday and Sunday.
Last night also saw SETU Carlow knocked out of the Higher Education Fresher Football League Division 2 at the semi-final stages with the college beaten at home by DKIT 4-19 to 2-19.
Soccer latest
Last night proved fruitful for Piltown native Karen Duggan who – while pipped to the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division Player of the Year award by Peamount United teammate Sadhbh Doyle – was included in the overall Premier Division Team of the Year alongside four of her clubmates.
Staying with that and hot on the heels of Stephen Kenny’s departure as Republic of Ireland manager, the FAI confirmed last night that all coaching staff including former internationals John O’Shea and Keith Andrews who were working alongside Kenny, have also departed the association. O’Shea is still involved at club level with Wayne Rooney at Birmingham.
Busy weekend of basketball
There’s a busy weekend for local sides on the national front. On Saturday in the MissQuote.ie national Division One, Marble City Hawks will host Oblate Dynamoes at O’Loughlin Gaels. Tip-off is set for 7pm. Also on Saturday, SETU Carlow’s men’s side take on Team Northwest at ATU from 5pm.
