Shane Curran, the former Roscommon star and All-Ireland-winning goalkeeper with St. Brigid’s, is poised to become the new Carlow senior football manager.
His appointment, which is pending ratification at the upcoming County Board meeting, has generated significant excitement among Carlow football supporters.
In an exclusive interview with KCLR, Curran shared his enthusiasm for the role and the reasons behind his decision to join Carlow. He highlighted a conversation with Jim Bulger, a key figure in Carlow football, as a major influence on his decision.
“When I spoke with Jim Bulger, his level of enthusiasm for Carlow football was unbelievable,” Curran remarked. “When you get that energy from somebody who is so highly vested in Carlow football, it kind of rubs off on you. It was just such a fantastic chat I had with Jim. He outlined his plans and where I could fit in them, and I’m hoping it’ll be a good fit for both of us.”
Curran also emphasized his commitment to building a strong foundation for the future of Carlow football, noting the importance of continuity and development at all levels.
“I’ve also spoken to Simon Rea, and he’s been an incredible voice as well,” Curran said. “The work he’s done at under-20 level hasn’t gone unnoticed, and we can keep building on that—build momentum, build enthusiasm through the process. Results and performances will follow. I’ve trusted throughout my coaching and playing career that once you believe in something and give it energy, it takes on a life of its own.”
Looking ahead, Curran is eager to meet with the players and begin shaping the culture that he believes will be central to Carlow’s success. “I’m really looking forward to meeting up with the players, getting to the centre of excellence. That will be our sanctuary. That’s where the culture will start and finish, and we look forward to many good, successive days in the future.”
Shane Curran and all Carlow football fans can follow all the action throughout the senior championship on KCLR.
