With swimming and Badminton events still underway at two sports locations in Vantaa on Day 3 of the 9th European Transplant & Dialysis Sports Championships, the first medal of the day, a bronze, was won by dialysis patient and Kilkenny native, Richard McEvoy.
Richard McEvoy, from Jenkinstown, Kilkenny (and now living in Castletroy, Limerick), won his Bronze medal this morning in the Badminton singles event, 30-39 years age category. This is his second medal win as a newcomer to Transplant Team Ireland having also won a bronze at the Darts event on Monday.
Richard, (age 31) a UL graduate and Engineer, said, “I really enjoyed the matches. They were extremely competitive with strong opponents. I’m really enjoying the games experience immensely. There is a real sense of family and everyone is very welcoming and friendly.”
Richard will compete later today in a Badminton Doubles event with teammate Mike Keohane, a liver transplant recipient from Cork. Other teammates Ned Crowe from Carrick-on-Suir and Team Captain Harry Ward from Baldoyle, both kidney transplant recipients, will also be competing in a badminton doubles event later today.
