What a day. What. A. Day.
It began with Cork taking the Premier Junior crown at midday before Kilkenny took a psychological edge in outclassing Cork in the Intermediate Final in the 2pm throw in.
When it came to the 4pm thrown-in, the game could have gone any way at all. But an exhibition in free taking from Denise Gaule coupled with a Shelly Farrell goal and Player of the Match performance from Mullinavat’s Julie Ann Moore put daylight between Cork and Kilkenny, the gap going out to nine points at one point in the second half.
22 years ago it was Ann Downey’s day, today, it belongs to Michelle Quilty and the entire Kilkenny team, as it was a solid team performance.
Tactically, they were able to curtail Cork’s distribution, getting the btter of Orla Cotter and Ashling Thompson in the second half while frustrating Gemma O’Connor to the point of the St. Finbarrs half back seeing red with ten minutes to go.
Evening trailing by seven in the closing minutes, Cork continued to press but even Orla Cotter’s late goal for the Rebels couldn’t stop the inevitable.
Cork Scorers
Orla Cotter 1-02, Katriona Mackey 0-02, Eimear O’Sullivan 0-01, Ashling Thompson 0-01, Aoife Murray 0-01, Hannah Looney 0-01, Libby Coppinger 0-01
