Former Kilkenny Hurler John Power says that games in pre-season competitions should be played on Astro Turf surfaces during the Winter period.

Speaking to KCLR ahead of Sunday’s Walsh Cup Final against Galway, John says that the Walsh Cup competition has taken on an extra importance as part of pre-season preparations.

“It’s taken on a new life – The Walsh Cup – because it is your first run out and an awful amount of players and management would be looking for challenge games if that competition wasn’t there”, says Power.

“The big thing for me I think they should bring it to the Astro Turf areas in Ballinakill and all them, you would much prefer that hurling will be played in those situations at this time of the year and if we haven’t enough of those pitches, I think the GAA should be providing an all-weather pitch to host the early competitions and the late competitions, both club and county and have the good conditions to play the game of hurling i.”

Meanwhile Admission is €10 for the game, €5 for students & pensioners, under 16s are free – and all proceeds from the game will go to the Leinster players hardship fund.

We’ll have live commentary on air this Sunday, live from Nowlan Park at 2pm.
