Carlow Senior Hurling manager Colm Bonnar says that winning a close game against Westmeath will have benefited them more than if they had won by a wider margin
Speaking to KCLR after yesterday’s two-point victory, Colm says they have plenty to work on ahead of the Antrim game at home next Sunday…..
“It wouldn’t do us any good if we had won it by another 4 or 5 (points), It was a tight game. We have to realize that we need to be more clinical in front of the post”
“We had maybe 7 or 8 very scoreable chances there in the second-half that could have given us a bit of a breathing space and we were nervous on the sideline up to the very last minute, because the worst lead to have is a two point lead and there is always a chance they were going to sneak a goal somewhere”
“With Westmeath going back over the years, it’s a hard place for any team to come and come out with two points so we have to be satisfied with that and we had to kind of regroup now and see where we can improve now going into the Antrim game next Sunday”
Meanwhile Colm says they have huge strength to their panel which will become stronger.
He says it will add to the competition for places….
“Obviously, Shane Kavanagh he is ready to train hard now from this Tuesday so he’s another man in contention and James Doyle is another man that was kind of injured coming in so we have huge strength, and when you see the likes of Seamus Kavanagh come on and Denis Murphy coming on and these players are used to playing for Carlow”
“So there is huge competition and we are delighted with that and lads are encouraged by it. It’s not a case where they are putting their heads down and they are disappointed”
“Of course they are disappointed but they are willing to fight for their place and come Tuesday, we will see that in training, where lads will be grouping together and they will be forcing our hand to pick the best 15 again”
